From the hand of Ludovic Assémat, director of the Department of Arts of the British Council Madrid, we will know how the British Council, the organization of the United Kingdom for the cultural relations and educational opportunities, promotes diversity and equality in electronic music with the #WeAreEquals Music Academy.

The third edition of #WeAreEquals took place in Barcelona on 21 and 22 February, with the MUTEK festival and the music production space Bridge_48. During the two days of the #WeAreEquals Music Academy, the 25 selected talents learned to develop their artistic identity, plan their careers and achieve new goals, from professionals from prestigious British institutions, such as Brighter Sound (Debra King and Kate Lowes) and Music Managers Forum UK (Jayne Stynes), as well as from the acclaimed producers Vicky Clarke and Chaines. On the Spanish side, the initiative featured sessions by Ivone Lesan (Asociación Mujeres en la Música y Primavera Sound) and Eduardo Gómez (DJMag).

The #WeAreEquals Music Academy initiative came about in 2019 in response to this reality and the values of equality and diversity that the British Council promotes in over 110 countries around the world. It is also a space for exchange and collaboration between Spain and the United Kingdom for professionals, music festivals, promoters, record labels and artists.

In addition to the academy for young electronic talent, the British Council collaborates with other initiatives that claim the role of women in the music industry, such as the KeyChange programme (led by the PRS Foundation), Amplify or the participation of British artists in sectorial debates on gender equality.
