MUTEK Barcelona becomes a biennial event: it will return in 2026... but will fill 2025 with digital creativity and electronic music.

True to the explorer and nonconformist spirit with which it was born in Montreal at the turn of the century, MUTEK continues to mutate around the world. An eagerness for renewal that Barcelona made its own in 2009 with the first edition of MUTEK Barcelona. More than 15 years after planting that seed in the cultural scene of the Catalan city, the only European venue of the festival continues to shape its own future.

Still with the successful 15th anniversary celebrated last April fresh in the memory, where 7000 attendees gathered around 40 performances spread over 7 venues, MUTEK is transformed following its particular experience. Thus, the event adopts a biennial format with the aim of enhancing its proposal by extending its deadlines: the sabbatical year that the festival lived in 2023, which was an undeniable boost to achieve the success of the 2024 edition, served as a learning experience.

“We have always been a living and changing festival, it is part of our identity. The biennial format will allow us to strengthen our programming: extending the deadlines means being able to follow artistic projects for longer and thus refine our curatorship. We will also be able to work on future partnerships with greater dedication,” explains Alberto Nerone, Director of MUTEK Barcelona. “Our own experience tells us that this change of periodicity is not a step backwards but a possibility to grow that we want to take advantage of.”

Thus, the next edition of MUTEK Barcelona will arrive next year, but time will not stand still in the meantime. Quite the contrary: MUTEK will fill the coming months with digital creativity with a program of performances spread throughout 2025, all with a life of their own but at the same time closely linked to the idiosyncrasies of the festival.
