DATUM CUT is the performance name of Maxime Corbeil-Perron, a Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal-based artist whose practice unfolds in a multiplicity of mediums: audiovisual performance, experimental cinema, electroacoustic composition, improvisation, sound art and installation. Through an approach related to media archaeology, his current works seek to establish relationships between obsolete media and contemporary technologies in search of new aesthetic possibilities.

As a director, he’s received numerous awards, namely the grand prize at Dérapage (Canada, 2022), the Sound Mutations category award at the Mute Film festival (Italy, 2021), and the best experimental animation award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival (United-States, 2021). As a composer, his work was awarded an honorific mention in digital music and sound art at Prix Ars Electronica (2021). His work was featured in several festivals and events on the Canadian and international scene. He has also released electronic music under various pseudonyms, includingM.edium, DRESDEN and Le Poisson d’Argent. He holds a PhD in composition and sonic arts from the University of Montréal.

Post-digital and analog meet in this performance by DATUM CUT, where creative methods associated with experimental cinema and video art merge with those of digital technologies. Oscillating between a black and white visual approach and a surrealist universe drawing from the richness of the prismatic colors of analog video synthesis, this hybrid work is both meditative and maximalist. It unfolds through a multitude of musical genres, from rhythm and noise to IDM, integrating samples of modular synthesizers, vinyl records, electromagnetic fields and no-input. Stemming from a transformative personal experience, inex.materia is an ethereal performance celebrating the ephemerality, impermanence and obsolescence of our bodies and technologies.

MUTEK's 15th anniversary presentation in Barcelona will be the first time that the Canadian artist presents a show in Spain, thanks to the support of the Bureau du Québec Barcelona.
