Producer Catherine Debard has been intimately involved in Montréal’s experimental music scene for the past several years. Under the pseudonym YlangYlang, the solo project she has been developing since 2012, she creates pieces blending field recordings, ambiant sounds, spoken word poetry and instrumentation from her many collaborators. She has released her creations on multiple labels from around the world, including the US’ Crash Symbols, Denmark’s Phinery, Sweden’s Fluere Tapes and Russia’s ΠΑΝΘΕΟΝ, and furthermore produces video game soundtracks for Montréal artist Palgal and audio hypnosis sessions for Ascension Hypnosis. YlangYlang performed at a number of international festivals, including Suoni Per Il Popolo, MUTEK Montréal, Electric Eclectics, Strangewaves and Tone Deaf, and secured a residency at Calgary’s Red Bull Music Academy in 2019. Recently, she collaborated with Simon Henry on the electroacoustic opera Le désert mauve, adapted from Nicole Brossard’s cult book.
Inspired by the release of Cycles & Decay, orchestral opus with a well-defined jazz sound and featuring recording sessions from guest musicians, YlangYlang will showcase her reflexions on death and rebirth on the Parterre du Quartier des spectacles on Sunday, August 29.
