A child of the ghettos of Cape Town, Alan Abrahams (Portable) draws extensively from his South African origins, adapting traditional rhythm structures in order to manipulate and modernize them, while integrating a combination of disparate elements (rhythms in 4/4 time, streams of hip hop, reggae and house) that permit him to create very particular sonic universes. Settled in London since 1997, he produced several CDs on Context and Background before creating his own label, Süd. Whatever the roots of Portable's rhythms, the composer still likes to shuffle the cards by recalling that his influences emerged not only from the music of the ghetto but also from native Chicago house pioneers, as well as from Arvo Pärt or Phill Niblock. His performances are reputed for being both engrossing and disorienting.
