NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE

Hot, heavy and cheekily anti-establishment, the sound of Matias Aguayo’s Cómeme collective seeks to pull electronic music away from euro-centric circles and toward the more festive rhythms and humour of Latin American showmanship. Never one to follow convention, Chile’s Aguayo has spent the past decade turning minimal techno on its heads by infusing it with breathless personality, sex appeal, and deep rhythms. A two-time MUTEK Montreal headliner who has a strong knack for self-reinvention, this year’s Cómeme showcase follows up his 2000 presentation of Closer Musik (with Dirk Leyers) and 2007’s presentation of Broke (with Marcus Rossknecht) with an all-new live-band project, featuring Vicente ‘Original Hamster’ Sanfuentes and Diegors, also members of his Cómeme label. A longtime member of Cologne’s Kompakt family, Aguayo has been instrumental in creating some of that label’s most durable records. 2002’s “After Love” (by Closer Musik) is one of the classics of the famed label’s golden period, and Aguayo’s 2005 solo debut, “Are You Really Lost”, was recently named by FACT magazine as one of the Top 100 Albums of the Decade. Its follow-up, “Ay Ay Ay”, was named the #7 Album of 2009 by influential electronic-music magazine Resident Advisor.
