SawakoJP

[CANADIAN DEBUT] Kato Sawako is a Japanese sound artist who divides her time between Tokyo and New York. A classically trained pianist and student of Japanese Nogahku theate, Sawako turned her attentions to video art in the late-nineties and consequently followed the experimental nature of that forum to digital sound design. Both classical and contemporary influences imbue her compositions, which have been described as a 'post-romantic' amalgamation of field recordings, instruments, voice and electronic sounds. Her recordings have as much to do with silence as they do with sound. Although she began releasing album in 2001 on small netlabels, she quickly gained association with micro-ambient champions Taylor Deupree and Richard Chartier of the seminal 12K and Line imprints. In 2005, 12K released Sawako's album Hum.
